Who I Am...

So I grew up the skinny kid who could run. In junior high I mainly did sprinting for the lack of wanting to run long distance. However, as you know...skinny people don't fair too well in sprints. After my 8th grade track season ended, my coach introduced me to the high school cross country and long distance track coach. He knew where my potential was and knew that sprinting was not for me.

That summer changed my life. I went from an okay sprinter to the top freshman in long distance. I had two people in front of me and ended up beating them by the end of my freshman year. It's probably the only time I was ever really good at something. It was the first and only time I ever had friends come watch me at track races. It felt good and I learned to LOVE distance running.

Sadly, my coach was forced to resign due to letting us have too much fun and not being strict like teachers are supposed to be. But, we respected him more than anyone and ran as hard as we could for him. They replaced him with a coach from a local school and that pretty much ended my running career. The new coach didn't run with us, he was like 65 years old, he preached religion and read stuff out of the bible everyday before and after practice and I just couldn't handle it anymore. I'm not religious, I just want to run. I don't care if he wants to love God, I just wasn't raised. I got in trouble for coming late to practice and leaving early just so I didn't have to hear him preach. After being punished to run more because of it I just quit.

Then my life turned downhill. I got into weed, cigarettes, alcohol, ditching school, getting into fights, etc. I saw where my life was going and decided to change it. My senior year I went on home school and changed everything. I started lifting weights, which I was always too scared to do since I could only bench the bar, and began running again. Then I joined the Marine Corps.

4 years later, I'm now out and currently working as a personal trainer. I have a chest injury and cannot lift weights anymore. But, I am an exercise fanatic and so I have to be doing something. I've recently got back into running a lot more and am saving to get back into cycling which I had a brief love affair with while I was stationed in Okinawa. I would like to compete in triathlons someday, but with this chest injury, swimming is not an option right now.

I'm creating this space to help motivate me to run more, keep track of my running and maybe meet a few people. Not one of my friends are athletic or even care to be, and my wife is the polar opposite of me! Haha, so maybe I'll meet someone besides my co-workers that like to run.

I'm glad you returned to an athletic lifestyle. I hope those mofos who fired your first XC coach die in a fire! You NEED coaches who make XC a fun experience!
